With all of the organizations business closely intertwined in virtually all aspects of the US real estate market the mortgage crisis forced congress to intervene with public assistance.

Many experts suspected that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were supported by the government and once those suspicions turned out to be correct the government assumed significant influence with those organizations.
